Marine jobs, conservation get ADB push

The Environmental Conservation for Sustaining Tiwi’s Aquatic Resources (ECO-STAR) Program represents a broad effort to protect and enhance Tiwi’s coastal and marine environments. The ECO-STAR Program encompasses several critical components, including the management of the 4.2 square kilometers Corangon Marine Sanctuary and the rehabilitation of beach and mangrove areas across 14 coastal barangays in Tiwi. Under the program, the Bariis River is being revitalized since 2017.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged ₱22.308 billion to support environmental projects in Mindanao and Palawan, focusing on the blue economy and marine conservation efforts.
Bangsamoro Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua welcomed the funding, calling it a major boost for building a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable economy in coastal areas of the Bangsamoro region.
“This means more support for places like Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi — coastal provinces where our communities depend on the sea,” Macacua said.
He explained that the blue economy promotes the sustainable agrowth and improved livelihoods, while protecting marine ecosystems.
Macacua noted that the funding could create opportunities for fisherfolk, seaweed farmers, women, youth, and those exploring marine-based enterprises or jobs.
“We know our strengths — seaweed farming, fishing, and tourism. But we also want to protect our coral reefs, mangroves, and islands, which are vital for both livelihood and the environment,” he added.
Macacua recently joined President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. at the 16th BIMP-EAGA Summit in Kuala Lumpur, where regional leaders discussed economic and environmental collaboration in Southeast Asia.
