Subic, Zambales — President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Tuesday reiterated his administration’s firm commitment to modernizing the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), emphasizing the need for cutting-edge technology, enhanced training, and expanded capabilities to meet the nation’s evolving defense and security needs.
"This administration remains resolute in its agenda of a future-ready and modernized Armed Forces of the Philippines," Marcos declared during the 127th anniversary of the Philippine Navy held in Subic.
Marcos led the christening and commissioning ceremony of two new naval assets: the guided missile frigate BRP Miguel Malvar and the missile-capable fast attack interdiction craft BRP Albert Majini.
"What we witnessed during the Commissioning Ceremony of the Navy’s two newly acquired vessels, the BRP Miguel Malvar and the BRP Albert Majini, is a Philippine Navy that is modernizing, that is evolving, and is ready to conduct more complex and effective operations in promoting the country’s national interest," he said.
The event also highlighted the continuing AFP Modernization Program, which is now in Horizon 3 (2023–2028), following Horizons 1 (2013–2018) and 2 (2018–2022). Marcos emphasized that modernization is not just about acquiring equipment but includes capability-building, personnel training, and sustaining operations.
Marcos emphasized that modernizing the Philippine Navy goes beyond acquiring new assets, focusing on enhancing capabilities, training personnel, and establishing maintenance systems to strengthen national security.
"More than just acquiring new equipment, this modernization is also about empowering the Philippine Navy with the necessary skills, knowledge, tools, and sustainment that would safeguard our nation’s interest," he said.
"This includes the expansion of our footprint in critical areas, beginning with the groundbreaking at Naval Station Nabasan, and continuing with Chiquita and Grande Islands. We are also establishing the Naval Support Base in Misamis Oriental so that Sangley Point can be devoted to other uses," he added.
He also honored the families of Navy personnel, calling them the source of strength and resolve behind every mission.
“To the spouses, children, parents, and loved ones of our brave soldiers — you are the source of courage and determination of our entire armed forces,” he said in Filipino.
Marcos closed his address by thanking the Philippine Navy for their dedication and sacrifice.
“While you keep watch over our seas and shores, every Filipino rests easier, holding on to new hope for a peaceful and progressive Bagong Pilipinas,” he said.
