In Amet Bituin’s first finals appearance in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s volleyball tournament, the 20-year-old Far Eastern University (FEU) rookie delivered a stellar performance that brought them to the brink of a long-awaited championship.
With 16 points built on 13 attacks and three blocks, Bituin helped lift FEU past defending champion National University (NU) in a thrilling five-setter, 22-25, 25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 15-13, on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The win placed the Tamaraws one step away from claiming their 26th men’s volleyball crown — and their first since Season 74.
But beyond the numbers, it was Bituin’s energy and heart on the court that left a lasting impression, especially in front of a crowd of more than 5,000 fans who packed the venue and brought the finals atmosphere to life.
“I’m just so happy. I bring my joy into the game and it shows in how I play,” Bituin said.
“I told myself earlier, it’s all or nothing — give it everything, leave nothing behind. My throat’s sore from shouting, but I didn’t care. I didn’t want to hold anything back or have regrets.”
His fearless effort and raw emotion gave FEU the boost it needed against a battle-tested NU squad eyeing a sixth consecutive title.
Every rally was a tug-of-war, but the Tamaraws kept finding ways to respond with Bituin often at the center of it.
FEU head coach Eddieson Orcullo credited the win to his team’s hunger and preparation, especially after falling short in recent seasons.
“We were hungry — and when you're hungry, it pushes you to prepare harder for the things you want to achieve,” Orcullo said.
“That’s what we kept telling the boys, even the coaching staff. We’ve prepared for everything. We just need to stay locked in.”
While Game 2 looms on Wednesday, Orcullo says their mindset is to stay sharp — and maybe even a little superstitious.
“We might not even sleep until Wednesday. Maybe we won’t even shower, so we can hold on to the luck we had today,” he joked.
“But seriously, this is just one step. We’re only halfway there. No one’s stopping now. Whatever happens on Wednesday, we’ll give it everything.”
