Rizza, a beloved Filipino woman described by her family as a “sweet soul,” was among the 11 persons killed in the horrific incident on the evening of 26 April at the Lapu-Lapu Festival in Vancouver, Canada.

Known for her kind heart and humble nature, Rizza’s tragic death has left her family — her husband and younger brother — devastated and mourning a vibrant life taken too soon.

The incident not only claimed Rizza’s and others’ lives, it left many others injured, some in critical condition, and has shaken the local community to its core.

As the identities of the victims continue to emerge, their stories paint a heartbreaking picture of lives cut short.

Kira Salim, a dedicated teacher-counselor from New Westminster, lost her life. Kira’s commitment to middle and secondary school students was deeply felt, and her contributions to both education and the drag community will be remembered by many.

The Le family — Richard, 47; Linh Hoang, 30; and five-year-old Katie — also fell victim to the rampaging driver. They had gathered at the festival, anticipating a joyous time, only for their lives to be shattered in an instant when the black SUV struck the crowd.

Maria Victoria “Vicky” Bjarnason from the Philippines, who was visiting her two sons, was another victim. Her son, Helgi, witnessed the moment the SUV hit his mother but was unable to save her.

Vicky’s death came one day after her son’s birthday, adding to the heartbreak of her grieving family who plan to bring her body back to the Philippines for a proper memorial.

Jendhel May Sico, remembered for her kindhearted nature, was another victim whose life is being celebrated by family and friends. Fundraisers are underway to cover her wake and funeral expenses.

Jen Darbellay, a mother of two young children, was also killed in the senseless attack. Her husband, Noel Johansen, who was injured, expressed his sorrow and gratitude for the support he’s received during this time, as he faces the reality of raising his children without their mother.

Val de la Cruz and his young son, Jeb, remain in critical condition, their futures uncertain as they recover from the trauma.

Ahmed Saadiq Quraishi, who had lined up before a food truck, suffered serious injuries and remains in critical condition, while Christi Watkins and her son Nox are stable and continuing their recovery.

The driver responsible for the tragedy, 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo, has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder. More charges are expected as additional victims succumb to their injuries.

Philippine Ambassador to Canada, Maria Andrelita Austria, confirmed that legal proceedings are ongoing and the embassy is providing assistance to the victims’ families.

“We’ve been in touch with the families and are doing everything we can to assist them during this difficult time,” Austria said.
