A former member of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front voluntarily surrendered to authorities in Lamao, Limay, Bataan on Saturday, in what officials described as a significant step toward peace and reconciliation.

Bataan Provincial Police Director Col. Marites A. Salvadora hailed the surrender as a “courageous step toward a better future,” not only for the former rebel but also for his family and community.

The 50-year-old man, formerly affiliated with the left-leaning ANAKPAWIS group, approached operatives from the 2nd Mobile Force Company of the Bataan Police Provincial Office, in coordination with other government forces. He expressed his desire to return to the fold of the law and start anew.

As part of his surrender, he turned over a 12-gauge improvised shotgun with ammunition, symbolizing his complete renunciation of armed struggle and support for the communist insurgency.

“This act is a courageous step toward a better future,” said Col. Salvadora. “We remain committed to helping former rebels reintegrate into society and will provide all necessary support to help them rebuild their lives.”

Authorities assured the former rebel of his safety and said he will be eligible for various government reintegration programs, including livelihood support and skills training.

Col. Salvadora also renewed her call for remaining insurgents to lay down their arms and take advantage of government programs that offer a path back to civilian life.

“The doors of peace are open. We urge others who are still involved in the armed movement to surrender and embrace the opportunity to live peacefully with their families,” she added.
