Kaunlad Pinoy, partylist #133 on the ballot, took center court on Sunday as it formally opened the 5th District Sunday Club Summer Basketball League in Manila. The event showcased the group’s advocacy for youth empowerment, community building and grassroots sports development.

First nominee Kuya Choi wowed the crowd not just with his message of hope and support for Filipino communities, but by literally jumping into action. He took part in the ceremonial jump ball to officially launch the tournament.

“Kaunlad Pinoy doesn’t just support businesses. Our advocacy also includes shaping the youth through sports, discipline and unity,” said Kuya Choi to a packed court of excited teams, coaches, families and fans.

For Kaunlad Pinoy, basketball serves as a platform to develop future leaders. The organization has long been involved in grassroots community efforts — not only focusing on livelihood and business training but also championing holistic youth development.

Sunday’s event reflected this broader vision.

“This isn’t just about trophies or scores,” Kuya Choi said. “It’s about giving our youth something to look forward to every weekend, offering them a sense of belonging, and channeling their energy into something positive. Whether in sports or in business, teamwork and strategy are key.”

Local youth leaders, district organizers and coaches also gave short messages, praising Kaunlad Pinoy’s consistent presence at the grassroots level. Players, wearing their brand-new uniforms, cheered as the lineup of matches was announced — setting the stage for weeks of exciting summer basketball.

“You don’t often see a partylist nominee doing the jump ball,” quipped one parent in the crowd. “But with Kuya Choi, you can really tell he wants to be part of the community. He doesn’t act like a politician — he’s like the big brother of the barangay.”
