Now that campaign events have begun at the local level, Malacañang Palace has issued a reminder to local candidates: Follow the law.

“First of all, you will be a leader, so you should be the one to follow the law. That’s our only reminder,” said Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro in a media briefing.

Castro also called on military and uniformed personnel to remain apolitical during the election period, cautioning them against being used by politicians.

“Don't let yourself be used, right, don't let yourself be used by politicians, don't let yourself be used by emotions. They know, they should remember that their job is to remain loyal to the country, loyal to the constitution,” she emphasized.

While Malacañang declined to comment on specific campaign-related matters, Castro said it is up to the candidates to determine how they will conduct their campaigns. She also reminded them to stay safe amid the summer heat.

“[Candidates] already know how to take care of themselves and their constituents. So, we will leave that decision to them,” she said, referring to campaign rallies and styles.

"But again, the DOH reminds us to be careful, drink plenty of water, go to places with shades and be careful," Castro added.
