University of Perpetual Help System Dalta ended its long drought when it captured the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 100 juniors’ tennis title yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Court in Manila.
Topseed Sherwin Nuguit beat Coby Castillejo of Mapua University, 6-0, 6-4, in the men’s singles event while Lance Maglaqui and Karl Roi Ricamara dominated Jaf Cunanan and Paeng Villanueva of Mapua, 6-3, 6-1, in the men’s doubles event to finally claim the crown they last lifted in 1995.
In their last championship, head coach Samuel Nuguit was still playing with Dennis Canaria under legendary mentor Pete Custodio.
Now, Nuguit's son Sherwin, along with Kale Cyd Villamar, Lance Jayrel Maglaqui, Jor Rodolfo and Shan Jette Ricamara are part of the team that brought the title back to Las Piñas.
“Finally, we were able to win it through hard work and perseverance,” the elder Nuguit said.
“They deserve this. I’m happy to see them winning the title before going to college.”
