He was the voice that soothed a generation’s heartaches. Now, Joe D’ Mango, the man behind the iconic Love Notes radio program, has embarked on a new chapter in Canberra, Australia, but his heart remains firmly rooted in connection and compassion.
For those who grew up in the Philippines in the late 80s and beyond, Joe D’ Mango was more than just a radio personality. He was a confidante, a guide and a source of comfort. His Love Notes program, a simple concept of offering advice and song dedications, blossomed into a cultural phenomenon, a testament to the power of shared stories and heartfelt words.
“When I started Love Notes in 1988, I didn’t have any idea that it would grow big as a program and as a brand,” Joe shares. “I just wanted to satisfy letter senders who were asking for some advice and want to dedicate songs to their partners. It started just as an experimental concept that just grew organically through the years.”
Today, Joe D’ Mango, whose real name is Rolando Sulit, resides in Canberra, Australia, where he and his family are Australian citizens. “My entire family moved to Australia in 2013,” he explains. His life is now a blend of pastoral work, culinary ventures and continued connection with his Filipino roots. “I am currently pastoring a small Every Nation Church (Victorian the Philippines) in Canberra (Capital of Australia). We also operate a small Ramen restaurant here (Ikigai Ramen). I am also doing some consultancy work for some good friends in Manila.”
While his days may be filled with new endeavors, Joe considers himself “semi-retired,” a reflection of his shift from the daily grind of radio to a more multifaceted lifestyle.
Joe’s understanding of the Filipino heart, particularly when it comes to love, remains profound. “Filipinos grow up surrounded by love stories —whether in teleseryes, movies or songs,” he observes. “These stories often dramatize romance, heartbreak and sacrifices, shaping how people perceive love as an intense and essential part of life.” He also notes the Filipino penchant for “hugot” (heartfelt) lines, the emotional one-liners that capture the essence of love and heartbreak. “Filipinos aren’t just obsessed with love problems — they find meaning in them, turning heartaches into songs, poetry and lessons in resilience.”
‘Keep believing in love. Keep writing. And remember, every goodbye is just the beginning of something new.’
The impact of Love Notes is something Joe carries with him. “Every encounter with someone who has been touched by Love Notes is always a memorable experience,” he says. “I love moments when listeners would approach me, sometimes with tears in their eyes, sharing how my words helped them through heartbreaks, rekindled lost love, or gave them the courage to move on. Some would even recite lines from past letters.”
Joe’s message to his fans is one of heartfelt gratitude. “Joe here! I just want to take a moment to thank you for your unwavering love and support over the years,” he says. “Every letter, every story, and every piece of advice we’ve shared has brought us closer together — like one big family connected by love, heartbreak and healing.”
He encourages his followers to stay connected through social media, where they can find “daily love advice, classic #LoveNotes moments and exclusive updates.” And, of course, he reminds them, “Don’t forget to send in your letters — we’re always here to listen. Spread love and positivity. You never know who needs a kind word today.
Adding to the excitement, Joe announces, The Last Goodbye: A Dear Joe Movie is coming this May in theaters nationwide! This is more than just a film — it’s a tribute to all the love stories we’ve shared over the years.” The film is a testament to the enduring legacy of Love Notes and a celebration of the power of connection.
“Thank you for being part of this journey,” Joe concludes. “Keep believing in love. Keep writing. And remember, every goodbye is just the beginning of something new.”
From the airwaves to the aisles of his ramen restaurant, from the pulpit to the silver screen, Joe D’ Mango’s journey is a testament to the enduring power of love, connection and the human spirit. He remains a voice of comfort, a beacon of hope and a reminder that even across oceans, the heart finds its way home.
