The management of NLEX Corp. announced on Sunday that it aims to complete repairs on the northbound lane of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) under the Marilao Interchange Bridge by 28 March following damage caused by a truck accident.

In a statement, NLEX said that the northbound section of the bridge will be temporarily closed for repairs starting Monday at 1 p.m. until 28 March at 11 p.m. and while the leftmost and rightmost lanes will remain open, motorists should expect heavy traffic.

“Please expect heavy traffic. Motorists may take alternate routes,” NLEX said, adding that a zipper lane will be opened in the southbound direction when conditions permit.

NLEX had initially estimated repairs could take two to three weeks but is expediting the work to minimize disruptions.

The damage occurred when a tanker truck exceeding the 4.27-meter height limit struck the bridge. NLEX is pursuing legal action to recover repair costs from the truck drivers and owners involved.

Meanwhile, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian urged authorities to expedite the repairs, citing severe traffic congestion, particularly for Valenzuela commuters.

“There is no reason why the repairs should take two to three more weeks. I strongly urge NLEX management to complete the repair immediately,” Gatchalian said in a statement Sunday.

He stressed the urgency of completing the repairs before Holy Week, stressing the need for smooth travel for holiday travelers.

To recall, Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon previously called on NLEX to waive toll fees during the repairs, citing significant delays and also urged the company to open additional lanes to alleviate traffic.
