The Philippine Embassy in The Hague extended consular assistance to former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte upon his arrival at Rotterdam Airport via a chartered flight. He was subsequently placed in the custody of the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) Judicial Cooperation Unit.
In an official statement, the Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to providing assistance to the former President.
In anticipation of the winter season, the Embassy supplied Duterte, his delegation, and the plane’s crew with winter clothing, a fresh change of clothes, and care packages. Dutch immigration authorities granted two-day visas to Duterte’s nurse and aide, allowing them time to rest and recover before their return flight. Meanwhile, former Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, serving as Duterte’s legal counsel, received a 15-day visa and was granted access to visit him at the ICC Detention Center in Scheveningen.
To ensure Duterte’s well-being, the Philippine Embassy actively coordinated with Dutch authorities, emphasizing the need for close monitoring of his medical and physical condition. Upon arrival, an ICC nurse—part of the reception team—consulted with Duterte’s personal nurse to assess his health requirements. The gathered medical details were then relayed to the ICC’s medical team for a comprehensive evaluation upon his admission to the detention center. The Embassy also stressed the importance of adhering to proper medical protocols, ensuring immediate attention to any health concerns.
As part of its ongoing consular responsibilities, the Embassy arranged for ICC officials to provide Duterte with direct contact information for Philippine representatives, assuring him of continued assistance whenever needed.
