Philippine entertainment has lost one of its most beloved comedic voices. Evelyn Bontogon-Guerrero, more popularly known as Matutina, the iconic comedienne best known for her role in the long-running sitcom John en Marsha, passed away today, 14 February, at the age of 78. Her daughter, Shiela Guerrero, confirmed the news.
Matutina's career began in radio before she transitioned to television, where she became a household name through John en Marsha, which aired on RPN Channel 9 from 1973 to 1990. Her portrayal of the squeaky-voiced maid to the wealthy Doña Delilah G. Jones (played by the late Dely Atay-Atayan) cemented her place in Philippine television history. Her distinctive voice and comedic timing made her a standout, and she popularized catchphrases like "Etcetera, etcetera" and "Cheke mo o Cheke ko?"
Matutina's comedic talents shone in various other television shows and films, including At Your Service, Matutina, Ang Inyong Lingkod Matutina, Dancing Master 2, and Kapag Baboy Ang Inutang. Her contributions to Philippine comedy are immeasurable.
Fans across generations remember Matutina's unique brand of humor and the joy she brought to their screens. Social media has been flooded with tributes and messages of condolences. The John en Marsha Legacy and Facebook group expressed their deepest sympathies to the Guerrero family, thanking Matutina for the laughter she shared with the nation.
Matutina's passing marks the end of an era in Philippine comedy. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and countless fans. She now joins her John en Marsha co-stars Dolphy, Nida Blanca, Dely Atay-Atayan, and the show's director Ading Fernando in heaven.
The nation mourns the loss of a true icon. Rest in peace, Matutina.
