A gag order has been issued by the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 144 against Tessa Prieto, prohibiting her from making any statements regarding the case she filed against her ex-girlfriend, Angel Chua, with the Makati Prosecutor's Office.
The court's order specifically prohibits Prieto from discussing the case in any public forums.
This decision follows an urgent motion filed by Atty. Alexander Llanes Acain Jr., who cited violations of the sub judice rule by Prieto. The sub judice rule restricts comments and disclosures about ongoing judicial proceedings to safeguard the integrity of the legal process and protect the rights of the involved parties.
Earlier, Prieto participated in an online interview with journalist Joan Maglipon, where she made public comments related to the merits of her case. These statements were widely shared on 10 February 2025 across online platforms and social media.
The enforcement of this gag order aims to ensure a fair and impartial judicial process as the case progresses.
Chua, who comes from a prominent Chinese and well-respected family, has expressed support for the gag order, stating that it will help protect her from potential harassment and misinformation spread by Prieto.
She asserted that gag orders could serve as a tool for others to protect themselves from the "diarrhea of the mouth" often displayed in the media for self-gain and attention, noting that there are more significant matters for the Filipino people to read about, rather than a circus that should be addressed in its "proper" venue.
Chua's counsel, Atty. Alexander Acain, emphasized that the measure is crucial for ensuring a fair legal process, allowing their client to focus on her case without distractions from public speculation and outside interference.
