Reigning Most Valuable Player Bella Belen of defending champion National University and Angel Canino of De La Salle University carry huge targets on their backs when they plunge into action in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament opening this weekend.
The Alas Pilipinas mainstays were the consensus choices among opposing coaches as the biggest threats in their respective campaigns in the much-anticipated second semester event in the country’s premier collegiate league.
Known for their scoring prowess, passion and unquestionable heart, bringing up their names was a no-brainer when mentors answered the queries about a particular player they’re keeping an eye on come the UAAP wars during the tilt's press conference held Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
After all, the two volleyball stars were trailblazers when they entered the senior ranks.
Belen made history by becoming the first-ever Rookie of the Year-MVP in the division back in Season 84 after leading the Lady Bulldogs to their first title in almost seven decades.
Canino, on the other hand, followed suit in Season 85 winning RoY-MVP all while dethroning NU.
“It’s both an honor and a challenge to hear that I challenge them (rival coaches). It makes me proud that I’m making an impact (for my team),” Canino said.
“It’s a challenge also that expectations are higher,” added Canino, who missed some games last season due to lacerations on her right forearm.
Canino and La Salle surrendered the throne last season after falling short in the Final Four against University of Santo Tomas.
Belen regained the highest individual award last year and was instrumental in sweeping the Golden Tigresses in the finals series to bring the title back to Sampaloc.
“Honored and at the same time challenged (by the recognition) because I don’t see myself at my best,” the power spiker said.
“It’s just humbling to know that other teams and coaches see NU doing a great job as a team and as a player. At the same time, it’s also challenging how I will perform at my best consistently."
The two prized wingers will be tested in an explosive season-opening clash on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
