Integrity during impeachment
While the President can claim all day long that he did not go on record as endorsing the impeachment, the first signatory to the endorsement was his own congressman son.

Integrity stands as one of the most critical virtues for a country’s President, especially during challenging times, such as an impeachment trial involving his own Vice President. In moments of crisis, national stability, public trust, and the moral fabric of governance come under intense scrutiny. The President’s ability to demonstrate unwavering integrity becomes the linchpin for maintaining order and confidence in the democratic process.
We recall President Bongbong Marcos Jr. staunchly saying that the impeachment cases hurled against Vice President Sara Duterte were unimportant, yet here we are with the Articles of Impeachment, signed by at least one-third of the House of Representatives, transmitted to the Senate right before Congress went into recess, putting in play a very intriguing scenario.
While the President can claim all day long that he did not go on record as endorsing the impeachment, the first signatory to the endorsement was his own congressman son.
The looming impeachment trial brings an added burden to the outcome of the midterm elections this May. The composition of the Senate post-election will decide on the outcome of the impeachment trial, as it needs two-thirds of the Senate to convict and effectively impeach the Vice President. Soon, we will have another legal spectacle, as the prosecution and defense panels will constitute to bring in the best, brightest and maybe well-connected, lawyers of the country in a teleserye that would last for weeks.
Our political leaders must tread carefully at this time, since it can be a situation that may trigger political turmoil, media speculation, and public unease. Our leaders must be able to navigate these turbulent waters with transparency, fairness and a commitment to justice.
The main person who must be extra cautious should be our beloved President himself — the President’s communication during such a trial must also reflect integrity. Transparent, honest and consistent messaging will help dispel rumors and misinformation. By openly addressing the situation, acknowledging its gravity, and outlining steps to ensure due process, the President will demonstrate respect for the people’s right to know the truth. This approach will not only mitigate public anxiety but reinforce the administration’s commitment to ethical governance.
An impeachment trial can deepen political rifts, creating an environment ripe for division and conflict. The President must rise above political rivalries and work towards fostering a sense of cohesion and collective purpose. By advocating for respectful discourse and discouraging inflammatory rhetoric, the President sets a tone of civility and statesmanship.
A leader with integrity also recognizes the importance of self-reflection and accountability. The impeachment trial of a Vice President inevitably raises questions about the administration’s vetting processes, decision-making and oversight. Integrity serves as a stabilizing force, guiding the President’s actions, communication and decisions. It fosters accountability, builds public trust, promotes unity and upholds democratic values.
My most humble advice to our President with the looming impeachment trial — stay silent and keep away from it, just like what he is doing right now.
