Ernest John Obiena finally clinched his first trophy of the indoor pole vault season after ruling the Meeting Metz Moselle Athlelor on Sunday in France.
Obiena cleared 5.70 meters, his season-best, in one attempt to rule the eight-man field in his second tournament of 2025.
The 29-year-old Hangzhou Asian Games gold medalist settled for a silver medal last January at the International Jump Meeting Cottbus in Germany.
Menno Vloon of the Netherlands might have hit 5.70m like Obiena but he settled for a silver medal instead due to countback.
Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Christopher Nilsen of the United States finished with a bronze medal after only clearing 5.60m.
“Merci beaucoup Metz! Will take the season’s best and a dub!,” Obiena said.
“Now time to sleep and get some much needed rest as we go back at it tomorrow!”
Ben Broeders of Germany and American Austin Miller ended up tied at fourth place after clearing 5.50m.
Keaton Daniel of the United States also cleared 5.50m but finished in sixth place due to countback.
Ioannis Rizos of Greece finished in seventh place after clearing 5.35m while Dan Barta of the Czech Republic finished in eighth place after tallying 5.20m.
At press time, Obiena is competing in the ISTAF Indoor in Dusseldorf, Germany.
There, he will face home bets Bo Kanda Lita Baehre, Torben Blech and Oleg Zernikel, Miller, Ersu Sasma of Turkey, Huang Bokai of China and Paris Summer Games silver medalist Sam Kendricks of the United States.
