The Met Gala, fashion’s biggest night, is set to return on 5 May 2025, with the Costume Institute Benefit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, will explore the history and impact of Black dandyism, from its roots in 18th-century Europe to its modern interpretations across the world.
Leading the event as Honorary Chair is basketball legend LeBron James, while the co-chairs include an all-star lineup of cultural and fashion icons:
Colman Domingo – Acclaimed actor and style icon
Lewis Hamilton – Formula 1 champion known for his bold fashion statements
A$AP Rocky – Rapper and trendsetter in menswear
Pharrell Williams – Music producer and Louis Vuitton’s menswear creative director
Anna Wintour – Vogue’s editor-in-chief and longtime Met Gala visionary
Curated by Monica L. Miller, the exhibition is inspired by her book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. It will trace the evolution of the Black dandy, a figure that emerged during the Atlantic slave trade and later became a symbol of resistance, self-expression, and style.
From the opulent tailoring of the 18th century to today’s streetwear-infused dandyism, the exhibition will showcase:
✔ Garments and accessories from past and present Black style icons
✔ Historical artworks, prints, and photographs that tell the story of Black fashion evolution
✔ Film excerpts and multimedia displays highlighting the role of dandyism in Black cultural identity
The host committee includes a diverse mix of trailblazers such as André 3000, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Regina King, Usher, Janelle Monáe, Olivier Rousteing, and Simone Biles & Jonathan Owens.
Reflecting the theme, this year’s dress code is all about tailoring, craftsmanship, and individuality. Expect a night of impeccably structured suits, bold colors, intricate embroidery, and cultural references to Black style through the ages.
The exhibition is made possible by Louis Vuitton, with major support from Instagram, the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation, Africa Fashion International, and The Perry Foundation.
With a theme so rich in history and meaning, the 2025 Met Gala is poised to be one of the most fashion-forward and culturally significant editions yet.
