The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) aims to expand the use of electronic filing and payments of taxes around 90 to 95 percent.
BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. on Tuesday said taxes paid electronically or online last year reached P2.06 trillion or 85 percent of the total taxes.
The BIR registered P2.85 trillion in total taxes last year, exceeding the P2.5 trillion in 2023.
“I doubt online transactions will reach 100 percent because some people still want the traditional way. They want to see and hold physical papers,” Lumagui said at the 2025 BIR National Tax Campaign Kickoff at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City.
He said the manual way of filing and paying taxes is still evident in the provinces.
To accelerate taxpayers’ adoption of online filing and payments, Lumagui said the BIR continues to enhance e-lounges at district offices where taxpayers learn and try electronic tools for related processes.
“We continue to improve e-lounges and ensure that all BIR district offices have them,” he said.
Last December, the Department of Finance (DoF) reported the BIR already achieved a 97 percent digitalization rate after launching electronic tools on faster taxpayer registration and monitoring.
The DoF said the BIR managed 16 digitalization projects consisting of completed and piloted projects out of 27 projects.
It added that these projects already helped BIR secure P2.67 trillion in tax collection as of November, higher last year, higher by 13.9 percent compared to the same period in 2023.
