American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan, who won Best New Artist in the 2025 Grammys, calls out record labels to give artists livable wage and healthcare.
“It was devastating to feel so committed to my art and feel so betrayed by the system and dehumanized,” Roan began.
The openly queer star with a drag culture-influenced aesthetic began her career in 2015 after signing with Atlantic Records. She released her debut album School Nights in 2017. The record label dropped her three years later. She moved back to her hometown to work as a barista before releasing the full-length album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.
Roan’s hits, “Good Luck, Babe!” “Red Wine Supernova,” “Hot To Go!” and “Casual,” just to name a few, have topped charts since their release.
“I told myself if I ever won a Grammy and I got to stand up here in-front of the most powerful people in music, I would demand that labels and the industry profiting millions of dollars off artists would offer a livable wage and healthcare, especially to developing artists…labels, we got you, but do you got us?” she ended.
Less than 24 hours after announcing her new world tour, Beyonce made history as the “first black woman to win Best Country Album” for Cowboy Carter. Noted as “the most nominated artist of the year with 11 nominations,” as well as “most awarded artists in Grammy history, Beyonce was also awarded Album of the Year (also for Cowboy Carter) — a first for her, too.
Sabrina Carpenter, meanwhile, took home Best Pop Solo Performance for “Espresso” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Short n’ Sweet.
Kendrick Lamar, who is set to perform at the 2025 Superbowl Halftime show, won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Not Like Us.”
