Dermatologists on Monday warned the public that IV Glutathione is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for skin whitening.
In a media forum, Philippine Dermatological Society President Dr. Jasmin Jamora stressed the dangers of unregulated IV Glutathione for skin whitening as it may pose serious side effects.
Jamora explained that "dermalinfusion" is not just "vitamins or supplements" but drugs or medicines.
"Isa po itong procedure na medikal na dapat gawin ng lisensyadong doktor o nurse na nasa isang direct supervision ng isang doktor (This is a medical procedure that should be done by a licensed doctor or nurse under the direct supervision of a doctor)," she added, noting that these procedures should be done in medical clinics with doctors onsite.
The health expert said there are no published clinical trials or evidence that show the efficiency of the use of injectable glutathione for skin lightening.
The PDS made the warning after a Filipino woman posted her experience with the use of IV Glutathione as a beauty procedure.
In the video, the woman, who could not open her right eye, asked viewers for their prayers to save her eyesight.
Several health and beauty salons, wellness spas, and beauty clinics are offering intravenous drip or infusion using skin-lightening agents including reduced glutathione, vitamin C, and other injections.
To date, the FDA has not approved any injectable products for skin lightening.
Side effects of the use of injectable glutathione for skin lightening include toxic effects on the liver, kidneys, and the nervous system. Also of concern is the possibility of Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
Injectable glutathione is sometimes paired with intravenous vitamin C and may form kidney stones if the urine is acidic, according to the FDA.
Large doses of vitamin C have resulted in hemodialysis in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
