Firaxis Games dropped an exciting revelation this Friday, unveiling the latest playable character to Sid Meier's Civilization VII — and it’s a name that makes Filipino hearts swell with pride: none other than our national hero, Jose Rizal!
Prepare to dive into history as Rizal takes center stage in the game. Gamers, here’s everything you need to know about Civilization VII and this extraordinary new leader.
Civilization VII is the highly anticipated continuation of the iconic turn-based strategy franchise. Known for its immersive gameplay, the new chapter will challenge players to build an empire wherein the player’s strategic decisions will shape their cultural lineage.
The game starts from the dawn of humanity to the modern age, as the player makes key decisions in areas such as diplomacy, culture, science, and military milestones.
Each installment in the series challenges players to build their empire, negotiate with rivals, and leave an enduring legacy through history.
Accordingly, each installment also included leaders that possess their respective unique abilities that are developed throughout gameplay.
However, for the first time, the new franchise will offer players a fresh update — they can choose their leader separately from the civilization which gives them more chances to make new strategies through various gameplay bonuses.
The game’s website provided a brief description on Rizal’s gameplay. His unique ability is called “Pambansang Bayani,” wherein gaining rewards from a Narrative Event adds more Culture and Gold per Age.
Given Filipinos’ innate festive and joyful personalities, another perk of choosing Rizal as a leader is the Increased Celebration duration and Happiness towards Celebrations, making citizens happier. He also gets additional exclusive Narrative Events.
Rizal is a leader whose gameplay style revolves around education, cultural advancement, and peaceful reform. His attributes, “Cultural” and “Diplomatic,” even reflect his real-life character and reputation as a political activist.
His agenda, “Kapwa,” represents pakikisama, the Filipino trait of striving for harmony and unity. He can increase relationships for the player with the most active Endeavors while decreasing it for the player with the most Sanctions.
Rizal’s journey begins in tropical landscapes, where the greenery and warmth of nature seem to mirror the environment that shaped his ideals.
The inclusion of a Southeast Asian national hero as a game character represents a new milestone in the Civilization franchise, highlighting its international appeal.
With Rizal’s intellectual prowess, emphasis on reform, and deep cultural influence, he is expected to bring a new point of view to the game’s roster of leaders.
You can look forward to exploring how his abilities shape gameplay and influence world events within the game, to be released on 11 February.
It will be available in three editions: Standard Edition, Deluxe Edition, and a limited-time Founders Edition. The game will be playable on these platforms: PC via Steam (which also supports Mac and Linux), Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and the Epic Games Store.
