OpenAI has unveiled “Operator,” a cutting-edge artificial intelligence agent designed to handle online tasks such as ordering groceries, filling out forms, and even creating memes.

Operator mimics human interactions by typing, clicking, and scrolling through web pages, broadening the practical applications of AI in daily life. According to OpenAI, the technology aims to save users time and increase efficiency in managing repetitive browser tasks.

“The ability to use the same interfaces and tools that humans interact with on a daily basis broadens the utility of AI, helping people save time on everyday tasks while opening up new engagement opportunities for businesses,” OpenAI stated in an official announcement.

The launch underscores the growing trend of AI “agents” in Silicon Valley — intelligent digital assistants capable of sensing their environment, making decisions and performing actions to achieve specific goals.

Tech giants have been racing to enhance their AI models with similar capabilities. In December, Google introduced agent-like features in its Gemini 2.0 model, while rival Anthropic incorporated a “computer use” function in its Claude AI model last October.

OpenAI described Operator as one of its first AI agents designed to complete tasks autonomously. It can perform multiple actions simultaneously, such as ordering a custom enamel mug on Etsy while booking a campsite on Hipcamp.

However, Operator remains cautious about tasks requiring sensitive information, like login credentials or payment details. When encountering CAPTCHA challenges or complex issues, Operator asks the user to intervene.
