Inauguration Day isn’t just about oaths and speeches—it’s also a day for viral moments. As Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States, one moment between him and First Lady Melania Trump left the internet buzzing.

Draped in a chic wide-brimmed hat by Adam Lippes and Eric Javits, Melania leaned in to greet her husband during the ceremonial proceedings. However, instead of a kiss on the lips, the President’s attempt ended with an air kiss to Melania’s cheek.

Was it the hat? Was it timing? Or, as some social media commentators speculated, was it just Melania’s signature poise? The moment immediately drew comparisons to other notable political PDA incidents—like Al and Tipper Gore’s enthusiastic smooch during the 2000 campaign.

One commenter quipped, “The hat may be stylish, but it’s definitely a protective barrier!” Others took the exchange as a lighthearted glimpse into the couple’s unique dynamic.

Despite the brief moment of awkwardness, the rest of the ceremony proceeded smoothly. Donald Trump now returns to the White House for his second term, with Melania’s unforgettable inauguration fashion—and that air kiss—cemented in the history books.
