The Diocese of Borongan in Eastern Samar is mourning the death of one of its bishops who died in a road mishap on Wednesday morning, 15 January.
In a statement, the Diocese of Borongan announced the passing of Fr. Alejandro “Alex” Galo who tragically lost his life in a vehicular accident at the national road of Barangay Naubay, Llorente in Eastern Samar.
Galo, 66, died after his motorcycle hit a sports utility vehicle (SUV) coming from a different direction.
The priest suffered multiple injuries that caused his death at the crash site.
Meanwhile, the SUV driver is now under the custody of the local authorities.
“We ask for your prayers during this difficult time as we honor the life and legacy of a remarkable servant of God. Details regarding the wake masses and burial will be communicated shortly,” Fr. James Abella, chancellor of the Diocese of Borongan said.
“Let us come together in prayer, remembering Fr. Alex in our hearts and asking for God's comfort for all who mourn his loss,” Abella added.
Galo, a native of Maydolong, Eastern Samar, was the head of the Commission on Church Properties and Commission on Church Cemeteries in the Diocese of Borongan.
According to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, Galo was a vocal opponent of mining operations in the province, actively advocating for environmental protection and the rights of local communities.
His advocacy, which included organizing communities, led to harassment and even death threats.
