Cebu City North District Representative Rachel Marguerite “Cutie” del Mar filed in the House last Monday, a bill seeking to establish a new regular Cebu Normal University (CNU) campus in Cebu City with new courses.

Del Mar told DAILY TRIBUNE that the primary goal of the CNU- Central Cebu City Campus (CNU-CCCC) is to develop a corps of leaders and professionals in various areas to strengthen the healthcare system, tourism and business industry and the economic development of the country, as well as to respond to the human resource development needs of Cebu and Region 7.

“CNU has not fully achieved its intents and purposes in some aspects which are equally essential in making the university at par with other universities and for it to become responsive to the developments in various sectors in the Philippines,” Del Mar explained.

The campus will primarily provide the following courses: Doctor of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, Juris Doctor or Law, Public Health, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Radiology, Bio-Medical Technology, Midwifery, Tourism, Hotel and Hospitality Management, Business and Economics.

It will also offer courses in Integrated Liberal Arts; as well as preparatory courses consisting of basic science, clinical and specialized courses, and graduate degrees using a learner-centered, competency-based, and community-oriented approach.

If approved, the CNU-CCCC building will be constructed on a 1,460-square-meter lot in Barangay Sambag II, Cebu City. CNU, through its president Daniel Ariaso Sr. and the Cebu Provincial Government, signed a usufruct agreement.

The new campus is expected to support the government’s efforts to reduce poverty, eradicate illegal drugs and combat crime.

The proposed campus shall also serve as a base hospital and clinical practice of its College of Medicine, College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. And if its capabilities warrant, cater to the base hospital needs of other state universities and colleges in the Visayas and other parts of the country offering courses in Medicine.
