PIDDIG, ILOCOS NORTE — In response to rising temperatures exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon, the Municipality of Piddig has temporarily restricted public entry to Mt. Lammin, located in Barangays Estancia and Dupitac. The closure, effective 13 January 2025, will remain in place until further notice.
Municipal Mayor Georgina S. Guillen emphasized that the measure aims to prevent potential grass fires that could harm the mountain’s ecosystem, wildlife, and nearby communities. Additionally, the restriction seeks to address environmental concerns, particularly the accumulation of garbage left by visitors.
Despite the local government’s preservation efforts, trash such as plastics and fast-food packaging continues to mar the area’s natural beauty. Reports obtained by the DAILY TRIBUNE revealed that campers and visitors have significantly contributed to this issue.
To enforce compliance, personnel from the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) are stationed at a forest ranger checkpoint to monitor access.
The local government reminds visitors and campers to practice responsible tourism by following these principles:
Take nothing but pictures.
Kill nothing but time.
Leave nothing but footprints.
The public is encouraged to support this initiative, underscoring the importance of preserving Mt. Lammin’s environment during this critical dry season. Together, we can ensure that the mountain remains pristine for generations to come.
