The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) expressed deep sorrow over the death of Deogracias Victor "DV" Savellano, Undersecretary of the Department of Agriculture, whose passing was announced on Tuesday. He was 65.
A committed public servant and cultural heritage advocate, Savellano held several significant positions throughout his career, including Governor and Vice Governor of Ilocos Sur, Representative of the 1st District of Ilocos Sur, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In its statement, the NMP noted Savellano's pivotal role in expanding the museum's presence in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Vigan. As Vice Governor, he facilitated the 2013 integration of the Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail (Carcel) into the Burgos House Museum, leading to the creation of the NMP’s regional museum complex in Ilocos Sur.
Savellano also authored Republic Act No. 11645, which declared a heritage zone in San Vicente, Ilocos Sur. He was instrumental in the preservation of Spanish colonial-era watchtowers and led efforts to restore the Magsingal Church ruins, transforming them into a heritage park.
The NMP also acknowledged for his leadership of the Ilocos Sur Historical and Cultural Foundation, his collection of Ilocano artifacts and textiles, and his promotion of Ilocano cuisine through his Metro Manila restaurant, Victorino’s.
The NMP described Savellano as a “great friend and longstanding patron,” whose legacy in cultural preservation will continue to inspire. They offered their deepest condolences to his wife, family, and friends, expressing gratitude for his “wholehearted service and love.”
“Agyaman kami unay iti naimpusuan nga serbsiyom ken ayat mo,” the NMP’s statement concluded.
