World No. 1 light-flyweight Regie Suganob is aiming for a shot at Shokichi Iwata’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) 108-lb crown.
But he has to wait a long while since the Japanese champion is not due for a mandatory defense until the middle of the year.
As Suganob waits for that all-important callup, his team is not taking it nice and easy.
In fact, Edito Villamor, the two-time world title challenger and consultant of PMI Boxing, told DAILY TRIBUNE that the Bohol puncher has been put on “maintenance training” so he won’t get caught flat-footed in the event a big fight gets offered to him.
Suganob, PMI Boxing’s top talent, is doing just that.
Two weeks ago, he stopped Thailand’s Nathanon Thongchai in the third round in Bohol to raise his record to 17-1 with six knockouts.
Iwata is also coming off a win, an easy stoppage win over Jairo Noriega of Spain at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo to win the WBO plum.
The victory boosted his record to 14-1 with 11 knockouts.
