Olivia Hussey Eisley, a British-Argentine actor who rose to fame as one of the star-crossed lovers in Franco Zeffirelli’s controversial Romeo and Juliet in 1968, died peacefully today at home, surrounded by her loved ones, according to a post on her Instagram page. She was 73.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Olivia Hussey Eisley, who went peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on December 27th,” the caption reads.

“Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her. … Olivia lived a life full of passion, love, and dedication to the arts, spirituality and kindness towards animals,” it added.

Hussey achieved global recognition at just 15 years old, portraying Juliet in Romeo and Juliet. Her performance, alongside Leonard Whiting as Romeo, won her a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer and remains one of the most memorable depictions of Shakespeare’s tragic heroine.

The film itself sparked controversy for its depiction of nudity involving teenage actors, but it remains a beloved cinematic classic, admired for its breathtaking visuals, emotional depth, and Zeffirelli’s masterful direction.

Beyond her defining role in Romeo and Juliet, Hussey had a long career in film and television, including starring in Black Christmas (1974), Death on the Nile (1978), and portraying Mother Teresa in the 2003 biographical film Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
