The Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) revealed yesterday that 19 cases of fireworks-related injuries were recorded in the region during the period from 21-26 December 2024.

According to DOH-7 Center for Health Development, eight incidents occurred one day after Christmas Day.

For the same period in 2023, there were 20 cases recorded.

Seven incidents took place in Cebu City, six in Cebu Province, three in Lapu-Lapu City, one in Negros Oriental, and one in Siquijor.

A 17-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after sustaining injuries while lighting a lantaka, an improvised cannon made using a bamboo pole, in Dalaguete, Cebu on 26 December.

The cannon exploded close to the teenager's face, and debris struck his eyes.

DOH-7 identified specific firecrackers, such as the improvised cannon referred to as lantaka, 5-star, and Piccolo, as the main causes of the reported injuries.

DOH-7 issued several tips on how to avoid fireworks-related injuries:

  1. Report individuals selling prohibited firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices such as the 5-star, piccolo, and lantaka to authorities.

  2. Refrain from using firecrackers during the celebration.

  3. Do not relight firecrackers you see lying on the streets.

  4. Keep small firecrackers that can be swallowed away from children.

  5. Opt for alternative noise-making items such as party horns, pans, and karaoke.

  6. Always supervise children to prevent them from using firecrackers.

  7. When watching fireworks shows organized by the local government, ensure to stay at a safe distance.

  8. Prepare first aid kits in case of emergencies.

  9. Promptly call the proper authorities for medical help if an incident occurs.
