CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Senatorial candidate Luis "Manong Chavit" Singson emphasized that he is advocating for a platform that includes a universal basic income (UBI) program called "Chavit 500."
This initiative aims to provide a P500 monthly stipend to Filipinos aged 18 and above who earn minimum wage or less, particularly those without income.
Singson envisions "Chavit 500" as a lifelong safety net for underprivileged citizens, offering support to help them through difficult times.
During a visit on Friday, 27 December 2024, Singson met with local government and barangay officials, as well as the media.
He highlighted "Chavit 500" alongside other key proposals, including a jeepney modernization initiative to promote eco-friendly public transportation and the VBank Initiative, a digital platform designed to improve financing access for small businesses and farmers.
Singson stressed the program's potential to uplift low-income families, improve education, and enhance disaster resilience.
He told the media that he is committed to ensuring the nationwide implementation of "Chavit 500" if he wins a seat in the Senate.
Manong Chavit also expressed readiness to address the challenges facing Cagayan de Oro City's river basin by sending experts to study its flood control system, while continuing his advocacy for environmental protection.
The city and province face the ongoing deterioration of the Cagayan de Oro River Basin, which leads to severe flooding during the rainy season.
According to Manong Chavit, who is number 58 on the Senate ballot, he is offering his experience in running public-private partnerships to initiate environmental protection projects, including large-scale reforestation and rehabilitation.
"These concerns need projects that include additional flood control systems, drainage improvements, and waste management facilities to reduce widespread flooding, especially during typhoons," Singson stressed.
He also aims to strengthen eco-tourism in Misamis Oriental, creating employment and additional income opportunities for its residents.
