Christmas came early for the national men’s football team after making it to the semifinals of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 last Saturday.
Marked by resilience and ambition, their journey has brought them to the semifinals, igniting hopes of a historic Christmas gift for their supporters.
But if you ask head coach Albert Capellas what’s his wish for the squad this Christmas, he will definitely say that a final appearance would be a perfect present.
“Personally, I’m very happy for everybody in the federation. Of course, we want to go to the finals,” said Capellas, whose wards will face defending champion Thailand in the semifinals on 27 December at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium and 30 December in Bangkok.
His words resonate with a deep-seated desire to elevate Philippine football to unprecedented heights.
The path to the semifinals was paved with significant challenges, none more formidable than the encounter with Indonesia as it unfolded as a testament to their resilience.
A pivotal moment occurred in the 63rd minute when Bjorn Kristensen converted a penalty, securing a 1-0 victory over Indonesia. This triumph not only ended a decade-long winless streak against the Garuda but also secured their place in the semifinals for the first time since 2018.
Goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad, who played a crucial role in maintaining the clean sheet against Indonesia, voiced the team’s sentiment.
“I’m very proud of the team and we’re gonna do everything to make it to the finals and bring the trophy home,” Kameraad said.
His words reflect a collective determination to seize the moment and deliver a historic achievement for Philippine football.
As the semifinals approach, the Philippines braces for a tough battle when it faces Thailand.
But the prospect of competing against a formidable opponent has only intensified the team’s resolve.
“I would love to have the support of the fans in our stadium. I would love to see the fullest stadium. I think the players deserve the support of the Filipinos.”
The players, too, are eager to perform in front of a packed stadium as Kammeraad expressed his anticipation.
