It’s time for the holiday season, bringing a much-needed break and deep appreciation for Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, the country’s most celebrated boxers.
After a whole year of relentless training and several notable victories, Petecio and Villegas welcomed the opportunity to spend Christmas with their loved ones, basking in the blessings that crowned their 2024.
Nesthy Petecio, a bronze medalist in the women’s 57-kilogram division of the Paris Olympics, beamed with joy as she finally got to spend the holidays at home.
It is a rare chance for this disciplined athlete to relax and recharge before she resumes training early next year.
“We wouldn’t usually go home for Christmas. Finally, we get to spend time with our families, and it feels so good,” said Petecio, who will be preparing for the World Championships in England in September and the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December.
“For now, I’ll eat a lot. We will get back to training in January. Everything goes back to normal.”
The boxing star had every reason to celebrate — her efforts in and out of the ring earned her not only accolades but also a well-deserved promotion within the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
As a soldier-athlete, Petecio’s dedication to her dual roles did not go unnoticed. She was promoted within the PCG, a recognition she cherished deeply.
“I am very thankful and blessed to have been given the promotion. Thanks to PCG for recognizing my hard work as a soldier-athlete,” Petecio, who will stay in the featherweight division, said.
“To the whole PCG organization, thank you for the support and trust, especially to Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan and Special Service Center Commanding Officer, Capt. Jonathan Serote.”
“This was one of many awards she received throughout the year. The success in international competitions was a result of significant incentives for Petecio, an indication that she had worked hard in pursuit of excellence.”
For Aira Villegas, who took home a bronze medal in the women’s 50-kg division, the year had also been marked by breakthroughs and blessings.
The young boxer, who has been steadily climbing the ranks in the sport, received incentives that she eagerly planned to share.
