The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Sunday announced that Immigration officers at all international ports in the Philippines are now authorized to greet arriving visitors with holiday cheer.
In a statement, BI commissioner Atty. Joel Viado said that the move aims to enhance the travel experience for international arrivals during the upcoming holiday season.
“Filipinos are renowned worldwide for their friendliness and warmth, particularly during the holidays,” Viado said.
“Greetings are not just about bringing happiness to others; they are also about demonstrating to the world how Filipinos celebrate — with friendliness, dignity, and inclusivity. It is a simple gesture that embodies our national identity,” he added.
However, Viado stressed that greetings must remain inclusive and polite, ensuring all visitors feel welcome regardless of their background or religion.
The commissioner also reminded travelers that government personnel are prohibited from accepting gifts or any form of gratuity.
“A simple smile or greeting can go a long way in cheering up our officers who work tirelessly to provide service to travelers, especially during the holidays when they sacrifice time with their families to report for duty,” Viado said.
The BI anticipates a surge in international travel during the holiday season, expecting around 110,000 daily arrivals and departures.
To ensure a smooth and efficient travel experience, the bureau advises travelers to cooperate fully with immigration procedures and arrive at airports well in advance of their scheduled flights.
The initiative to allow immigration officers to greet travelers with holiday greetings reflects the government’s efforts to enhance the country’s tourism image and provide a more welcoming experience for international visitors.
