Dear Editor,
One of the most talked-about topics in various media outlets is Vice President Sara Duterte, who faces another impeachment complaint — the third this month. The allegations against her, ranging from culpable violations of the Constitution to bribery and corruption, are serious and deserve careful scrutiny.
The complaint, filed by religious groups, including Catholic priests and lawyers, highlights alleged irregularities in the disbursement of P612.5 million in confidential funds allocated to the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education.
A significant portion of these funds was flagged by the Commission on Audit, after P125 million was reportedly spent in just 11 days in December 2022. These accusations, if proven true, are deeply concerning, as public officials are expected to uphold the highest standards of accountability and transparency.
While the impeachment process is a constitutional mechanism for ensuring accountability, it also has implications for the country’s governance. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently expressed his opposition to the calls for Vice President Duterte’s impeachment, describing it as a potential distraction that could tie Congress down and detract it from the more urgent national issues. His perspective — that the process would not directly benefit ordinary Filipinos — raises valid points about the cost of prolonged political proceedings.
At the same time, it is important to acknowledge the sentiments of those supporting impeachment. For many, the issue goes beyond politics — it’s about ensuring that public funds are used responsibly and that those entrusted with public office are held accountable for their actions. This is the cornerstone of good governance and public trust.
In reflecting on this controversy, I am reminded of a past headline in which Vice President Duterte made a remark perceived as a threat to the President, the First Lady and the House Speaker.
While her statement was conditional and framed as a hypothetical, it sparked concerns about decorum and respect for the presidency. Such actions and remarks, whether intentional or not, add to the challenge of maintaining harmonious relationships within the government.
It is also worth noting that this issue has further divided public opinion. On one side, critics of Vice President Duterte emphasize the need for accountability, while on the other, supporters, including groups like the Iglesia Ni Cristo, have warned against the destabilizing effects of impeachment. These differing perspectives highlight the complexity of the situation and the importance of finding a resolution that prioritizes the nation’s welfare.
While I agree that accountability is non-negotiable, I believe the focus should remain on what would best serve the Filipino people. Whether through impeachment or other avenues, the pursuit of justice and good governance must not come at the expense of national progress and stability. It is crucial that all parties involved approach this matter with a balanced perspective, aiming for solutions that restore trust in our institutions while addressing the pressing needs of the country.
