BAGUIO CITY — For almost a decade, only one club has been dominating the Januarius Fil-Am Invitational that came to a close on Sunday at the Camp John Hay Golf Club and Baguio Country Club here.
It’s no longer the case this year as a lot of things have been unraveled in the longest and largest amateur event in the world.
Eastridge has emerged as the new king of this prestigious tourney after halting what could have been Manila Southwoods’ 10th straight crown in the Fil Championship division.
Manila Southwoods’ lineup in both Fil and Am Championships were no pushovers but the lack of Fil-Am experience of its players was definitely a big factor in its performance.
But what’s scarier is the fact that Eastridge’s young players, whose average age is 13 years old, wound up with a podium finish in a division just below the premier championship.
The future looks bright as the tournament is set to celebrate its 75th edition next year.
“I’m truly excited to witness the emergence of young talents competing in the recently concluded 74th Januarius Fil-Am Invitational,” Fil-Am co-chairman Jude Eustaquio said.
“It’s evident that there is a remarkable resurgence in the game of golf following the pandemic, both globally and particularly here in the Philippines. This revitalization is reflected in the increased participation at the Fil-Am Invitational, highlighted by a substantial number of waitlisted teams eager to join the competition.”
He said it is particularly nice to see a new generation of golfers are showing immense talent and potential.
Also, it is amazing to witness junior golfers who play many times a year are likely to continue playing golf as adults.
These rising stars, at some point, would be golfers to watch and learn from in the coming years.
In addition, participation increased by at least 20 teams that hiked the number to more than 700 in the regular competition and around the same in the seniors event or an estimated 1,400-plus the past two weeks.
“The excitement surrounding the tournament is palpable, and the future of the Fil-Am Invitational looks exceptionally bright,” Eustaquio said.
“A prime example of this new wave of talent is the Eastridge Team achieving a commendable upset against the traditionally dominant Manila Southwoods. This victory not only speaks to the skill and determination of emerging golfers but also sets a promising precedent for the future of the tournament.”
