The bells are ringing, the air is crisp, and the streets sparkle with twinkling lights as families and friends gather to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. For many Filipinos, Christmas is not just a holiday; it’s a vibrant cultural phenomenon, steeped in time-honored traditions that unite communities in faith, joy and devotion.
A month of cherished traditions
Wendy, 22, from Isabela, believes December is a month of cherished traditions. “For me, Christmas is all about family and faith,” she says.
“We begin with Simbang Gabi, and it’s such a beautiful way to come together every early evening. Then, we wrap up the season by strolling through the dazzling Christmas displays at SM Supermalls.”
Simbang Gabi, which traces its origins back to the Spanish colonial period, has been a beloved tradition for over 350 years.
‘Simbang Gabi’ honors the Virgin Mary
For Wendy and her family, Simbang Gabi is a sacred time of togetherness.
Held from 16 to 24 December, Simbang Gabi honors the Virgin Mary and prepares the faithful for the birth of Jesus Christ. “After attending Simbang Gabi, my family and I usually head to SM. It’s become part of our tradition to visit the mall after the evening Mass. We enjoy spending time together, admiring the Christmas displays and shopping for gifts.”
They usually attend Mass at a small chapel in their Barangay, where the faithful gather in close-knit unity.
Unlike in other churches where Mass is held early in the morning, their Barangay celebrates Simbang Gabi in the evening at 5 p.m., making it a community affair that feels both intimate and lively.

While Simbang Gabi remains central to the Filipino Christmas celebration, modern traditions also take root, with many families making visits to iconic shopping destinations such as SM Supermalls. “Going to SM after Simbang Gabi adds to the celebration by extending the festive spirit. The mall is filled with decorations, lights and a joyful atmosphere that perfectly complements the peaceful feeling from the Mass. It’s a way to carry that Christmas joy into more family bonding time.”
