Marvin Tabamo vies for a gold medal as he goes up against Asilbek Jalilov of Uzbekistan in the men’s 51-kilogram division of the ASBC Asian Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Tabamo is coming into the match with confidence after beating Hsu Po Hao of Chinese Taipei via a referee stopped contest in the second round.
The 28-year-old Bacolod City pug is off to sizzling start and his road to the gold medal started with a unanimous decision over Siiovush Mukhammadiiev of Ukraine in the Round of 16.
Then, Tabamo picked up a split decision over Xiangkun Wang of China in the quarterfinal to assure himself of at least a bronze medal.
With his victory over Hsu, Tabamo has at least a silver medal with him.
Meanwhile, four other Filipino boxers got bronze medals in the tournament.
Jay Brian Baricuatro of the men’s 48-kg division, Ian Clark Bautista of the men’s 57-kg division, Mark Ashley Fajardo of the men’s 63.5-kg division, and Riza Pasuit of the women’s women’s 57-kg division will be bringing home medals after making it as far as the semifinals.
