The filing of the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte at the House of Representatives on Monday was a reunion of the long-discredited yellow mob. With the partylist fronts of the communist movement in the House of Representatives as backup, the cast for another mob rule is complete.
Those consorting with both groups should cast a wary eye since the playbook they will follow will not be bound by the Constitution, going by their track record.
The groups seeking to boot out Duterte include the Magdalo, Mamamayang Liberal, Tindig Pilipinas, Catholic Church prelates, and representatives of the families of alleged drug war victims.
Magdalo is the partylist of chief destabilizer Antonio Trillanes IV; Mamamayang Liberal is the partylist remnant of the Liberal Party; while Tindig Pilipinas groups the civil socialites who claim the divine right to choose the leaders for Filipinos as they are credited with leading the two successful People Power revolts.
The complaint, which was endorsed by Akbayan Partylist Rep. Perci Cendaña, cited culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes as the grounds for impeachment.
The group is determined to defy President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. who appealed against filing the complaint since it would be a waste of time for Congress which still has the 2025 national budget to finish and submit to him, preferably before the end of the year.
Mr. Marcos wanted an end to the divisiveness that went on full display during the long-drawn out House Quadcomm inquisition of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Filing the complaint against Sara close to Congress’ holiday break indicated the hypocritical mob had plans other than following the right process to remove the Vice President.
Considering that the complaint is not expected to prosper because of the President’s cue and the lack of time for it, it would be used as a springboard for the yellow mob to claw out of its political grave.
The Constitution gives the House 10 session days from the filing of the verified impeachment complaint to include it in the order of business, and three days thereafter to refer it to the appropriate committee.
The panel then has 60 session days to submit a report to the plenary, after which the leadership has 10 session days to calendar it for resolution. Congress, however, is set to adjourn for the holidays by 20 December.
It will reconvene on 13 January next year, but it has less than a month to process the complaint as it is scheduled for another break by 7 February, before the campaign period for the 2025 elections begins.
The next session period will take place after the elections, a few weeks before the next Congress session takes over. House members, except for a few, including the Makabayan bloc, have indicated that they will heed the President’s plea.
“In the larger scheme of things, Sara is unimportant. So please do not file any impeachment complaints,” Marcos’s leaked text message to members of the House of Representatives read.
The bigger picture, however, should worry the administration of Mr. Marcos since the opportunistic mob has not kept secret that its target for removal is not only Sara but also Marcos.
The evolving plan is an overhaul of the entire government structure short of the revolution that has long been advocated by the terrorist New People’s Army.
The intricate web of deception has been spun and the groups that once violated the people’s democratic right to choose their leaders are at it again.
