As the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) on 3 December 2024, SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, is reaffirming its commitment to championing the empowerment, inclusion, and support of individuals with disabilities. In 2024, SM Cares has intensified its efforts with a series of impactful initiatives aimed at breaking barriers and fostering a society where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive with dignity and respect.
One of the cornerstone events of SM Cares' advocacy is the Angels Walk for Autism, which took place in April 2024 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. In partnership with the Autism Society Philippines, this annual event has become a powerful platform for raising awareness and fostering acceptance of the autism community. The walk was held across multiple locations nationwide, with thousands of families, advocates, and allies coming together to call for inclusivity.
In March 2024, SM Cares also hosted the Happy Walk for Down Syndrome in partnership with the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines. The event celebrated the Down Syndrome community and provided a vibrant atmosphere where individuals with Down syndrome and their families were able to come together to raise awareness and promote understanding.
Alongside these flagship events, SM Cares has continuously advocated for preparedness and resilience. The organization hosted its annual Emergency Preparedness Forum for Persons with Disabilities and senior citizens. This initiative, which has been running for six years, offers training and resources to help these vulnerable groups stay safe during emergencies and disasters, equipping them with the tools needed to face unforeseen events with confidence.
Fostering Inclusivity in Education
SM Cares’ commitment to inclusivity extends to education as well. Book Nook, a vibrant community library located in SM Malls, hosts special events aimed at celebrating diversity and neurodiversity. In partnership with Best Buddies Philippines, Book Nook held book readings focused on themes of inclusion and understanding, giving children with special needs the chance to engage in activities designed for their development.
2024 has been a monumental year for SM Cares, marked by significant strides in creating an inclusive society for Persons with Disabilities. From organizing awareness-raising events like the Angels Walk for Autism to implementing digital accessibility tools and promoting inclusive sports, SM Cares has worked tirelessly to build a society where everyone is valued.
As SM Cares looks ahead, it remains committed to empowering Persons with Disabilities, advocating for their rights, and ensuring that no one is left behind. Through every initiative, SM Cares is fostering a world where disability is no longer a limitation, but a call for greater inclusivity, innovation, and community.
SM Cares continues to be a driving force in corporate social responsibility, supporting various advocacies including environmental sustainability, women’s rights, senior citizen initiatives, and, of course, the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities. With every step, SM Cares is helping build a society where all individuals, regardless of ability, can thrive.
