University of Perpetual Help System Dalta tapped one of its distinguished alumni to head its football team that is making a return in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for its centennial season this year.
Adrian Bequillo was hired to lead the men’s football team of the Altas after leading the school’s other football teams in the past.
Bequillo, who played for the Altas in 2011 and 2012 under coach Miguel Cases, said he wants his alma mater to stand a fighting chance against other schools as it makes a return in the NCAA after a six-year leave of absence.
“For our preparation, since my players are coming from different cultures, we are in the process of making adjustments for the system that I want for the team,” said Bequillo, an AFC-B licensed coach with international stints in Japan and Vietnam. He also coached the football squad and futsal squads of Perpetual-Biñan, where he won an NCAA South title in 2018.
“Right now, our players are from the grassroots program, going through tryouts to form a competitive team this NCAA season. What I can promise the Perpetual community is that we will give a good fight. We are not only preparing for this season, of course, but also for the upcoming NCAA seasons.”
As part of their preparation, Bequillo is inviting other school and club teams to play with them in friendly matches at the Molina Field inside the school campus. The initiative is being done in support of the Perpetual Altas FC and Perpetual Altas High School Alumni.
The first time the Perpetual football squad won an NCAA championship was in 1990 under Rey Salonga. Then, they won the NCAA crown in 1998 under Cajes.
