Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, a member of the Senate Committee on Public Information, participated in the Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) Station Managers Conference on 27 November in Pasay City.
The event gathered 62 radio station leaders to discuss enhancing journalists' welfare and strengthening radio stations nationwide.
With the theme "Revolutionizing Media Now," the conference underscored the media’s role in promoting transparency, press freedom, and democracy.
"As pillars of democracy, the media ensures transparency, accountability, and the free flow of information. Events like this provide a platform for collaboration, reinforcing our shared responsibility to uphold press freedom and professionalism," Go said.
Go also introduced Senate Bill 1183, the "Media and Entertainment Workers Welfare Act," to protect media workers by offering health insurance, overtime pay, and other incentives.
He highlighted the recently signed Republic Act 11996, the "Eddie Garcia Law," which improves working conditions for entertainment workers, a law he co-authored.
Go expressed concern over threats to journalists, noting the importance of protecting them in a democratic society. He referenced the Task Force on Media Security, created under former President Rodrigo Duterte, and emphasized the need for urgent measures to address impunity, as the Philippines ranks 9th on the Global Impunity Index.
The event was attended by various officials, including Senators Alan Cayetano, Francis Tolentino, and Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa. Go also acknowledged RMN’s leadership, including chairman Eric Canoy and other key executives.
When asked about his future plans, Go responded, "I will continue to serve as best I can, focusing on health, infrastructure, and pro-poor programs for our most vulnerable citizens."
He reiterated his commitment to advocating for media and entertainment workers and urged the media to help disseminate information on health programs and government services. Ending his speech, Go encouraged media practitioners to continue championing truth, integrity, and public service, working together for a better future for the Filipino people.
