The Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) 2024 gathered policymakers, government officials, and industry leaders to strategize on building resilient communities across the region. Among the prominent participants was SM Prime Holdings (SM Prime), a leading property developer, showcasing the private sector’s critical role in disaster risk reduction.
Hans Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, delivered an impactful speech during the Plenary Session on Localization and Urban and Rural Resilience. His address highlighted the private sector’s unique position to foster resilient communities, especially amidst rapid urbanization and worsening climate change impacts.
“The intersection of sustainable development and resilience is of great interest to me as a property developer,” Sy shared, emphasizing SM Prime's commitment to sustainability and resilience.
Sy underscored the importance of localization and data-driven decision-making in disaster preparedness. By empowering local communities and harnessing data, organizations can create targeted responses to the challenges posed by disasters and climate change.
One key initiative, the “Adopt-a-City” project, exemplifies SM Prime’s approach to resilience. In collaboration with the National Resilience Council (NRC) and local governments, the program strengthens disaster preparedness by prioritizing local knowledge and leadership. This public-private partnership model underscores the importance of aligning national goals with localized strategies for sustainable, long-term impact.
Strengthening Partnerships for a Sustainable Future
SM Prime’s active participation in APMCDRR 2024 reaffirms its dedication to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. By contributing resources, expertise, and innovative solutions, the company not only sets a benchmark for disaster resilience but also encourages other businesses to take part in shaping a sustainable future.
As discussions at APMCDRR 2024 emphasized, building resilience is a shared responsibility. Through initiatives like “Adopt-a-City” and its broader commitment to sustainability, SM Prime exemplifies how the private sector can play a transformative role in creating a resilient and secure future for communities across the Asia-Pacific.
