The West Visayas State University (WVSU) has reopened its fully restored Quezon Hall, a historic landmark in La Paz, Iloilo City.
The restoration project, a collaborative effort between the Henry Sy Foundation and the SM Foundation, aimed to preserve the building's architectural integrity while modernizing its facilities.
"The Quezon Hall project underscores the value of investing in educational infrastructure to create conducive learning environments," said WVSU president Dr. Joselito Villaruz.
The renovation involved a comprehensive overhaul, addressing structural concerns, repairing concrete and steel elements, restoring wooden moldings, stairs, balusters arcs and columns, and repainting architectural features. The roof was also restored to maintain the building's historical character.
Villaruz said that the restored hall now houses 24 classrooms, faculty rooms, and administrative offices. The College of Arts and Sciences will manage the facility, serving students from all WVSU colleges.
To enhance the building's functionality, the project included strategic lighting improvements, additional ceiling fans, and new restroom facilities.
Faculty rooms on the ground floor received significant structural reinforcement. Modern technological upgrades were incorporated while adhering to the NHCP's guidelines.
“We are not only restoring a building but also investing in the potential of every student,” said Dr. Lydia Echauz, executive director of the Henry Sy Sr. Foundation.
Originally constructed in 1926, Quezon Hall had suffered from decades of deterioration. The restoration project addressed these issues, ensuring the building's longevity and its continued role in the university's academic mission.
The reopening of the restored Quezon Hall marks a significant milestone for WVSU and the city of Iloilo, preserving a piece of history while providing a modern learning environment for future generations.
