Dear Editor,
The rise of cybercrimes in the country is becoming a growing concern, especially now that the number of social media platforms is spiking, which was evident in a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.
SWS showed that a record 7.2 percent of Filipino families have fallen victim to a cybercrime in just three months, jumping from 3.7 percent in June and this surge — coupled with a rise in traditional crimes — paints a concerning picture of public safety under increasing threat.
In light of the rising incidences of cybercrimes, we welcome the call of Senator Bong Go for stronger cybersecurity measures to protect vulnerable sectors and marginalized communities, which is particularly crucial.
These demographic groups often lack the resources and awareness to navigate the digital landscape safely as predatory scams, phishing attacks and data breaches can have devastating consequences for individuals and families already struggling financially.
Moreover, the anonymity afforded by the internet allows criminals to target these communities with relative impunity.
However, the issue extends far beyond financial loss, as cybercriminals can exploit personal information for malicious purposes, including identity theft, harassment and even blackmail which can lead to severe emotional distress and disruption of victims’ lives.
Cyberattacks can cripple critical infrastructure, causing widespread disruption and economic damage and we can’t help but think that the rise in traditional crimes alongside cybercrime suggests a multifaceted problem — while online threats are prevalent, the dismantling of traditional criminal operations cannot be neglected.
The senator’s reminder about sustaining the progress made under the previous administration in combating illegal drugs and corruption acknowledges that the interconnectedness of crime and a holistic approach, encompassing both the digital and physical realms, is necessary to ensure public safety.
Fortunately, solutions exist, with Go’s co-authorship of the Internet Transactions Act highlighting legislative efforts to regulate the online environment, strengthening this framework and enforcing existing laws crucial to deterring cybercriminals and protecting Filipinos online.
Also, investing in public awareness campaigns is equally essential and educating citizens on online safety practices, recognizing phishing attempts and securing personal data will empower Filipinos to defend themselves in the digital world.
However, building robust cybersecurity measures requires collaboration and there is a need for government agencies, technology companies and educational institutions to work together to create a secure online environment.
This might involve developing national cybersecurity strategies, fostering public-private partnerships and investing in cybersecurity infrastructure.
But the crux of the matter is the responsibility doesn’t solely reside with institutions. Individuals also play a critical role. Utilizing strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication and practicing cautious online behavior are essential steps for personal online security.
It is also a fact that the Philippines boasts a young and tech-savvy population, which presents a unique opportunity to leverage technology for good. By prioritizing cybersecurity and embracing safe digital practices, Filipinos can ensure the internet remains a tool for progress and not a platform for criminal exploitation.
We believe that addressing the root causes of crime remains crucial — as poverty, unemployment and societal inequalities often push individuals towards criminal activity. Investing in social programs, promoting economic opportunities and fostering a sense of community can create a more secure environment in both the real and virtual world.
The rise in cybercrime demands immediate action. By adopting a multi-pronged approach — strengthening cybersecurity measures, implementing crime prevention strategies and fostering public awareness — the Philippines can combat these threats and create a safer digital and physical future for its citizens.
The time for decisive action is now.
