Cebu Pacific has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability as it introduced two new electric buses into its airport shuttle fleet.

This initiative is one of the airline’s ongoing efforts to convert its ground operations to electric, emission-free vehicles and equipment.

CEB chief strategy officer Alex Reyes said that as the aviation industry acknowledges the pressing need for sustainable operations, the airline is expanding its decarbonization efforts beyond the modernization of its aircraft. Integrating electric buses into their ground operations is a move in this direction. Through this approach, they aim not only to reduce their carbon footprint but also to enhance the overall travel experience for their passengers.

Reyes added that these buses were leased from Therma One Transport and produced by vehicle manufacturer BYD, which will shuttle CEB passengers traveling to and from the boarding gate and the aircraft.

First Balfour president and chief operating officer Anthony Fernandez said that driven by their mission towards decarbonization, they are actively exploring opportunities in the electric vehicle space and are pleased to have found a new partner in Cebu Pacific as it champions decarbonization in the domestic aviation industry. They are also confident that their partnership will contribute to a safer and more sustainable travel experience for the public.

Fernandez explained that the T1 Transport is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the engineering and construction firm First Balfour.

At NAIA Terminals 3 and 4, CEB runs 25 buses that are all fueled by conventional fuel. These two electric units’ trial program will offer insightful information about how well they operate in actual use. Additionally, this plan is a significant step towards increasing the usage of ground support equipment and zero-emission cars across operations.
