The Manila International Airport Authority has ordered the area at NAIA Terminal 1 where a significant seizure of illegal substances occurred to be cordoned off to allow exhaustive research by a K9 unit including adjacent places.

 MIAA acting general manager Eric Jose C. Ines said the seizure was made in an out-of-service cooking area in the old restaurant at NAIA Terminal 1. A quantity thought to be methamphetamine, weighing about 1.6 kg and wrapped in black tape and deteriorating plastic bags with a street value of P11,458,000, was discovered in this long-closed and protected area.

It appears that the narcotics had been hidden there for a while because the seized area has been closed since the pandemic and has only recently reopened for possible renovations.

"This incident, while concerning, highlights the vigilance and effectiveness of our security measures," Ines said. "We remain on full alert, with the ultimate goal of ensuring a drug-free workplace. These discoveries, although significant, are part of an ongoing investigation that reflects our unwavering dedication to the safety and security of all individuals within the airport premises," he added.

To further strengthen security, the airport acting chief met with the MIAA Security Block and shall meet with key law enforcement agencies in NAIA, including the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the National Bureau of Investigation. These collaborative efforts aim to enhance coordination and intelligence sharing to prevent similar incidents in the future.
