BAGUIO CITY– Baguio City will soon be going to have two specialized High Schools focusing on the arts and sports as the Lower House Bills for such approved its final reading and conveyed them to the Senate.
According to Baguio City Lone District Representative Mark Go, House Bills 7316 and 8700 were already transmitted to the Senate and are awaiting the appropriate recommendations from the concerned committees for plenary debates and amendments.
HB 7316 seeks to establish the Baguio City High School for the Arts while HB 8700 also seeks to establish the Baguio City Sports High School.
Go who is the principal author of HB 7316 said that by creating the specialized public high school for the arts, the city's youth and even those from neighboring areas will have a place where their aptitude and skills in culture and the arts can be honed with the most conducive environment, facilities and curriculum. He also said that the establishment of a specialized public high school in the city that shall offer a sports-focused education to its learners will finitely contribute to enhancing the city's identity as a haven of sports talents that continue to bring honor and pride not only to the city but also to the whole Cordillera and the country as well.
The proposed sports high school will be administered and supervised by the Department of Education in close coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission. The congressman explained that the sports high school shall implement a general secondary education, as prescribed by the pertinent provisions of Republic Act (RA) 10533 for students with considerable sports potential.
He added that the school curriculum shall emphasize developing the students' athletic skills through subjects about physical education and sports.
Go hopes that the Senate will be able to act on the proposed bills when Congress resumes sessions after the Yuletide break so that the proposed law will be submitted to the Office of the President for its enactment into law.
