Senator Raffy Tulfo raised alarm on the ongoing power interruption in Panay Island affecting a huge number of residents in the area since Tuesday, 2 January.
Tulfo said he will be filing a Senate resolution to probe the series of power interruptions and the stoppage of plant production on the Island.
"Lubos kong ikinababahala ang kalbaryong dinaranas ng mga residente ng Panay na apektado ang pamumuhay ngayong bagong taon dahil sa power outage roon (I am really alarmed by the adversities experienced by the Panay residents whose livelihood have been affected by the power outage in the area)," he said in a statement.
Citing the report of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, Tulfo said there's a disruption in the energy distributions for the Panay province, including Iloilo, Aklan, Capiz, Guimaras and Negros Island.
Tulfo noted that the Panay Energy Development Corp. Unit—the largest energy distributor in Panay—is currently under maintenance shutdown, followed by the operation stoppage of PEDC Unit 1 and PEDC Unit 2.
Also, a unit of Palm Concepcion Power Corporation—the second-largest power plant in Iloilo— has stopped working.
Tulfo, who chairs the Senate Committee on Energy, said he continuously is coordinating with the NGCP, Department of Energy, National Electrification Administration, and other concerned agencies to monitor the energy situation in the area and provide possible solutions to it.
"Maghahain din ako ng Senate Resolution upang imbestigahan at mapanagot ang mga nasa likod ng hindi katanggap-tanggap na power outage na ito sa Panay island (I will file a Senate Resolution to investigate and make liable those behind the power outage in Panay Island)," he said.
As of 3 January, there's a power loss of at least 68.75% in the entire Panay province, with only 4 out of 13 power plants supplying energy in the area currently operational.
Tulfo said at least 300 megawatts of energy is needed to stabilize the power operation system and to provide 100% power supply in the area.
