The expanded number coding scheme in the metropolis is suspended on 25 and 26 December and on 1 January, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, or MMDA, announced yesterday.
"The implementation of the expanded number coding scheme is suspended on the following days this holiday season: Monday, 25 December, Christmas Day; Tuesday, 26 December; and Monday, 1 January 2024, New Year's Day," the MMDA said.
To recall, the agency had earlier cautioned the public that traffic in Metro Manila could be more congested as Christmas Day approaches.
Also, the agency reminded holiday travelers to always plan their trips, obey traffic laws, and drive cautiously.
The MMDA's Traffic Discipline Office staff extended their tour of duty in preparation for the massive influx of vehicles expected in the National Capital Region over the holiday season.
The MMDA earlier announced that malls would open at 11 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. from 13 November to 8 January 2024.
The modification aims to alleviate the expected traffic congestion during the Christmas season.
